After ten years as my primary year round daily driver, and 160K miles I put on it, in 2010 I finally walked away from stock and installed a fuel injected GM 3.1L V6 and WC Tremec 5 speed with a narrowed 10 bolt GM rear. For the price of a rebuilt 1800cc I could have done this conversion twice! I've not regretted the conversion one second. Its a Mustang killer in sheep's clothing no problem. 32mpg to boot.
