Hey all

My 71 Spitfire has a single Zenith Stromberg carb. It has two bolts that are holding it to the manifold and I cant seem to get a wrench on them to get them off. Has anyone ran into this here and if so what tool did you use to get them off. There is very little turning room. Also what size alan wrench is the set screw in the dash pot. And no, I am not sure I am spelling that right. Thanks for any help.

James

Getting the carb off is a fiddle. I used an inexpensive(thin) wrench and it is an awful tussle. Prepare to turn and flip often. Just a pain but, it will come off.

Dashpot set screw? One that holds the needle in? or The fuel richness adjustment?

yes, it is a PITA. Like Larry wrote above, a smaller, thinner wrench makes it a bit easier, but not much

If you are talking about and allen wrench for adjusting the needle by going down through the dashpot, you will need the special adjuster tool or you will very likely tear the diaphragm inside the dashpot

I had heard that I needed a special tool for it. What is it? ansd where can I find it?

It's called a Zenith/Stromberg adjusting tool . Spitbits, VB, BPNW have them to name a few.

Had that carb for years.

The adjustment tool is available at all British places.

Likely it is not needed. First goal is to remove your carb and use the $40 rebuild kit after you clean the carb. Fairly easy.

I never needed to adjust my cab in 30 years, I did mess it up a bit though with that tool.

I finally got the carburetor off the manifold. I took a half inch wrench that was cheep and took it to my bench grinder. I made it much thinner and it gave me the room I needed to get it off. After it was off I checked my Diaphram and all the seals. All but three were in perfect condition. My diaphram was also not on the fuel meter correctly. The tab on the bottom was not lined up right. I put it all back together and now the car has power again. My brake calipers should be here by the end of the week and my colortune plug will be here tomrrow. I plan on timing it and tuning it tomorrow night. Then when the brakes are done on Sunday I hope to be able to test drive it around town.
