My gear shift is suddenly loose and sloppy

Well, I don't know what happened today, but when I took off, the car was fine. I drove it all over and on my way back, it suddenly felt weird when shifting. At the final stop, it really changed and I noticed that I had to pull up on the gear shift and really search to find the shift from 2nd to 3rd. I also now cannot put it into reverse. What has loosened up in the shifting linkage to cause this?

Hi Chris:

What year is your Spitfire? It would help us if we knew that you had a 3 rail or

single rail gearbox.

Your ball cone on the bottom of your shifter has fallen apart, (disintegrated), it's made of hard plastic. It's happened to me, just like you describe, one minute fine the next.... It only cost maybe $5 or $6 bucks, and it's easy to replace once you remove the tunnel and carpet, oh and the radio tower. The part looks like half of ball with a hole on the center for the shifter to sit in as it sits in the "joint" as it were of the transmission upper remote assy.
