rust repairs...what should I do

Ok guys, I stripped the whole interior of the car and here is what I found...see picture. I looks worst on the picture but I yet to really get down and dirty and do a really close inspection but after cleaning what I could it looks and feels solid...What do you guys recommend I should do?

A friend told me to use some kind of acid that he used in his Camaro...he offered me the bottle he had left over, I also thought about doing POR15. Just not sure about how labor intensive this could all be...

My thoughts are to do a good job with some type of rust products, paint it over with some rustolium black paint all the way from as high up in the front of the interior as I get reach back to the trunk. Then I was thinking about using the Eastwood mat (Dynomat equivalent) inside the car all the way to the gas tank...a little concern of the added weight?

I'm thinking about doing the rust process on 100% of the interior then the bottom of the car (the bottom is really not that bad but if I'm doing the investment and it's not to expensive or labor intensive why not) then I will go all the way to the firewall and top shelf (and as you all know that shelf is rust heaven). For the bottom all the way to the edge of the engine shelf and wheels wells (no rust issue on the wheel wells) I will use the rubberized undercoat. The shelf I will probably just paint with rustolium (or whatever you guys recommend) until the car gets a full body paint...maybe it will be a few years for the full body paint. this is the main reason i will like to do a good job at stopping/repairing the rust in the car.

Anyone done something like this? or did you all jsut change the floor sheetmetal? Maybe I can see changing the driver side but the passenger side is really not that bad so I still would need to know how to address the rust issue.

Thanks
Manny

kind of hard to tell with these photos but basically if it's just surface rust, clean, treat and paint.
Poke at the rust with a screwdriver, it you feel it is cracking and / or the rust is inside the metal then you have to replace.

I've heard really good things about this rust attacking stuff called Purple Power you get at advanced auto parts for 6 bucks. People have said they used it & the rust never came back over the years. I bought some & used it on my spit about a month ago, nothing comming back yet lol. I wish my floor looked like yours, mine has a hole in the drivers side panel where your feet go but otherwise solid, yours looks pretty good as long as its still solid. Yeah welcome to the forum and that floor does not look to bad I have seen worse LOL.
I used some stuff we use on our boat called steelseal which turns the rust black juts like the stuff POR sells I think.

Hi, Manuel-
Welcome to the forum! I took the advice from others on this forum, and used Purple Power that I found at the local Advance Auto, and was very pleased with it- easy to use, and seems to do the trick nicely on surface rust. I'm glad you found this forum- great bunch of folks willing to share their knowledge and experiences.

Manny, that doesn't look so bad, at least you have some paint showing through. After you've had a chance to poke around with a screwdriver, and confirm that it is only surface rust, you can brush it with a wire brush on the end of an electric drill. Clean it right down to bare metal, hit it with some Purple Power, Rust Mort, etc. That stuff can be primed and painted right over top. Have fun, and welcome.

Thanks!! I will have to look into the Purple Power stuff. I still need to do some pocking but I did see a hole around one of the bolts for the driver seat but I think I can ask my neighbor (who is a welder) too teach me how to patch it. The driver front is the worst but I'm keeping my fingers crossed...really dont' have the $200 for a replacement panel but I will not cut the expense if its necessary.
Bottom line I want to do the best I can so it last for a very LONG time! smiling smiley

I will try to keep you all posted

Thanks
Manny

If you must, you can just do the foot well portion, the rest looks pretty good. I seen those small panels on ebay, from what I've heard they need a little fitting. They cost like $90.

Yeh, that might be a good option...do I just do a search for Spitifire or are these genetic floor pans?

You might have to search for a few weeks, sometimes they don't show up for awhile. If I run across them I'll post the link.

Perfect! Email them first and see what gauge steel they use. Oh, forget the email, they use 18 gauge, I should have read the copy. Good deal 50 bucks for one, you'll have to hammer and dolley it into place.
