Cam timing Spitfire MKII (no replies)

There have been a bunch of threads on this which I have studied at length, but I need micromanagement help ...I am good with a spanner and electrical, but timing has always seemed a dark art...

Spitfire MKII

I rebuilt my engine a couple of years ago and was driving around in it, but it never ran that well, and I had never used a timing light. Now that I have, it turns out that TDC appears to be ~40 degrees off or so - the mark is about 40 degrees to the left of the pulley when facing the engine head on (retarded?)

So I pulled the timing cover last night and have been scrutinizing the original (green) triumph manual. I took the timing chain back off since the cam gear has no markings whatsoever, figured I needed to start again.

1. Set engine to TDC (cam key facing up, cylinder 1 at top)
2. turn engine clockwise (normal rotation, right?) to get # 1 pushrod at top of travel, then set # 8 valve to .040
3. turn engine clockwise to get #2 at top of travel, then set # 7 valve to .040
4. turn engine until #7 and 8 are on the rock and measure for clearance. Here is my first problem - I am supposed to have the same clearance (no matter how small) between each valve, but despite setting these to .04 earlier, there is no gap - both are tight (though visually even) - is this ok?
5. assuming that step #4 is even and step #1 is the same exact position, I now need to place the timing gear and chain on, and line up two of the 4 holes exactly with the chain being tense on the left side (as facing the engine). If I do this, I don't quite understand how the 1/4 tooth 3/4 tooth issue come into play..

Help! Any more idiot level presentation of this information (including me sending you beer) would be immensely helpful.

BTW, turning the cam even with the plugs out is sort of tough- I need to screw in both of the bolts for the timing gear and use them to lever the cam around. Is this normal?

thanks - Nick

I've been sitting around too long and I'm getting bored. Plus my programming skills are atrophying! I've been annoyed lately that I can never find anything on the computer related to the Spitfire. Where did I put that wiring diagram. Which of those cryptically named PDF files has the info I'm looking for. Where's that link for the website that has all the odd custom bits like the trunion oiler gun?

How do I manage all my picture and associate them with a particular build process...better yet, how can I track the progress of a rebuild and associate the pictures and parts purchased with the car.

Would anybody be interested in a program that could do this? What features would you add to an application like this?

Rear Brake Drums... (1 reply)

Been checking out various parts suppliers (Moss, VB, TRF, and various google searches) and have not come across Rear brake drums for 1980 5 speed TR-7's. Has anyone seen any available? How easy (or hard) is it to find someone to turn the old ones when putting new pads on? Is there a way to convert these to disk brakes and how difficult or expensive is that to do.

The TR-7 I bought last year has been stuck in storage waiting on finding the parts I need to repair the rear brakes. Travelled 130 miles to get the new exhaust put on and found out the rear brakes were essentially shot. This happened in November and I am getting antsy to get it back.

I even bought a parts car, but this is one of the parts that I don't think I can reuse...

Any ideas?

I have the dual Strombergs carbs, the front one has one vacc port on the top that has 0 vacc @ idle and increases as I accelerate.

The back carb has 2 ports, one on the top one on the bottom. The bottom is manifold vacc (vacc at idle and constant cruise, drops on acceleration). The top port is always showing 0 inches no matter what (Is that normal?)

Anyway, I have two vacc plus on my Delco distributor, for what I understand a vacc advance and a vacc retard for deceleration. So what do I plug? Front carb ported vacc on the front of dist, and always 0 to the back (but then why not just plug it?).

Also ...
I have a new dist from Jeff (Advance dist) with only one port, I think I'll plug the front carb ported vacc on it, those are vacc advance not retard right?

Weber dgv carborator / U..S. only 1975 dist. bad running and poor gas mileage (2 replies)

Every question about drivablity here seems to involve Weber Side draft carborators. I need help with a two fold rough running problem. A. Weber DGV single downdraft carborator with a stock engine and and distributor. Apparently the U.S. distributor for 1975 was some reverse engineering masterpiece that British Leyland dreamed up with Mechanical advance and Vacuum retard. My carborator won't run smooth until thoroughly warmed up, and the dizzy is set at spec at 10 btdc as per book. There is only one vacuum port on this carb and the dist. is connected to that port. When I got the car the manual choke was disconnected and the mixture screw turned out 7.5 turns to make it start. I discovered this after a long drive home at high speed on the interstate when unburned fuel accumulated on the drive blew off the muffler as I backed off to go through an inter change. After setting up the choke and adjusting the mixture screw it was better, but due to circumstances I have only been able to put less than 2000 miles on it in 4 years. (working out overheating issues and exhaust system and warped exhaust manifold) Last year before putting away filled it with premium, put in a bottle of fuel treatment, and on the way home from storage again filled it with premium (93 octane Shell unleaded) visual inspection of the valves when the manifolds were off showed them looking like new at the stems, idles dead smooth when warm but still pops back during acceleration. Could more regular us help as the carborator seems to run rich as gas mileage is terrible Ran out of gas once completely. Instinct tells me it is lack of use, but that was partially caused by regular overheating. It has a new oversized readiator, a new 195 degree thermostat, plugs look good, At long last to do something with the overheating tried white vinegar and that brough out much that wasn't whited or clear with pieces of rust and white scale.. so with it running cooler I hope to put more miles on it. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I asked about this issue before as an aside in another thread, and got some advice but need to revisit it since replacing the engine and gear box mounts did not cure it.

When I take off in first or if I let the clutch almost all the way out or all the way in reverse I get a jerky or shaky release into gear. Sometimes at the beginning of second gear I get a little shake too. If I can find third it does not occur there and I get a kind of whine in fourth (which may be another issue).

So, I replaced the mounts as mentioned and that helped a bit and the slower I let the clutch out seems to help with the shake. I believe the next thing that was mentioned was U-joints. I have ordered the U-joints for the drive shaft. Got the "Hardy Spicer" ones from Spitbits as the "Hardy" ones were mentioned as a better brand for this critical part.

I have read the different threads in forum regarding others experience with replacing these and I think the ones in the final drive too, and want too know just how difficult it is too get right. From what I have read it seems to be tricky. Can it be completed alone or are two people needed.

The whole zerk thing I have never heard of and the manuals are never thorough enough for me, but that is the way all the software docs that I have for work are too so any advice about the process is most welcome. :)

One more thing I tested per someone's advice here to see if the clutch was slipping I think. I let the clutch out while in fourth gear and the engine does stall.

It's been a long time since I've posted here. Nice to see this great forum is still alive and well :)

I bought a Pertronix kit many months ago but I was too lazy to install it. The car was running OK with the points so far, so I wasn't in any rush to do this. Well, I finally decided to look at the instruction sheet and started the installation. 15 minutes later every thing was installed. This looked too easy and I was kinda skeptical about the engine starting as usual. Well, it did and it ran just fine.

So if you were thinking about installing such a kit, go ahead ! It's a no-brainer :)

I finally went with a triangular turn signal from pep boys of all places. It was a new marker light they sold.
I still need to trim up the front quarter valences and bumper.
The console is about done as well:
I finally tacked the door hinges on each side and notched the deck to allow for opening and closing of the bonnet.
Engine compartment. Harrison tank works well. With carbs back from Mr. Curto, I can get a consistent idle with the S2cam around 1500. I also think that my gauge may be off, as the Type 9 ratios are not exactly the same as the
GT6 I believe.
I'm happy with the mods made to the rear end. I may go to a quieter muffler set up at some point.
Going with Hagerty for coverage. I have a colleague who is going to help me shoot a full set of pictures for the insurance concerns as well as the journal here.

Hi, i have recently bought and restored a 1980 Spitfire 1500. When I bought it, it ran a bit rough and the seller did advertise it with the words, "could use a tune up". I have put it in a workshop where the mechanic has stripped and cleaned the carb and tried a number of other solutions, but now it is running even worse. The previous owner has fitted a weber 40 carb with open trumpets and the twin exhaust system that is fairly common on Spitfires. The car runs quite rough until warmed up when it gets slightly better. Gently pressing the throttle, the car pulls slowly but smoothly, giving it more gas makes it splutter which is cured by giving more throttle until it clears its throat and pulls strongly. Since the mechanic has fiddled with it, it now runs even worse and too much throttle causes it to backfire. I have checked all the ignition parts, the plugs are okay and the gap is correct, (although the mechanic replaced two of the plugs with two that fit, but are slightly different although he says this is fine, the threaded part is a bit shorter on the new ones, the point gap is okay and all the other bits seem fine. Any advice that I can use or maybe offer to my mechanic would be greatly received.

replacing transmission mounts on TR6 (no replies)

Hi,

I've got my 1973 TR6 apart for reconditioning. I have the interior out and the transmission tunnel removed so I have easy top access to the transmission mounts. I'd like to replace the two rubber mounts at the back end of the transmission, right before the drive shaft. I've got the bolts off the top, but at the moment don't have the bolts off of the bottom. My question is: Can I replace the two mounts without removing the small cross brace underneath (by pushing up on the drivetrain), or would it be easier to just unbolt the cross member and drop things down?

Thanks,

I have been looking for a driving light that fits the spot on the car right but isnt really expensive--and finally our Princess Auto(Canadian Harbour Freight) had exactly what was sought after.

Quite well made stainless steel 100 watt lights for 15$ for the pair! So happy I bought a spare set as well. Mounting was straight forward and there will be a relay controlled circuit wired in for them.

The overriders have their second mounting plate done now , and it is time to finish the grille.

Started cutting and tacking pieces for the trailer hitch. Trying to make it hidden as possible back there.
It looks like the last repaint was done w/o any preparation or cleaning. The rear end under the bumper had paint fall off in sheets. Like they sprayed over the oil film back there.

What would be the best recommendation to get the Damaged area ready? I plan to sand it down to the original blue paint. Overall the car is pretty solid a base to respray, but I don't want this to happen under the new coating. Car will become bright yellow this time.

After searching across the net, I cant seem to get a solid yes or no answer on weather I should install a oil cooler kit on my spitfire 1500. I use the car as my daily driver when the weather permits. round trip to work is 60 miles of non-stop 4 lane, and then the usual errand runs in between. Summers here in AR get pretty warm (95+) so I have been thinking about this option. The engine is in great shape and I have had NO
temperature problems so far. So, final question.. YES or NO? and if not what may be some other options? I hope I haven't stirred up a hornets nest here, but look forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

I am having the above described problem, it is intermittent, it happens more on downshifts, on upshidts it is ussually fine sometimes it clunks into 2nd, sometimes like hitting a wall, no go. On downshifts it happens more usually like hitting a wall, sometimes (rarely) it goes in hard with a crunch.

All other gears go in like "butta"

It is a fairly newly rebuilt tranny, I rebuilt it myself. Second seemed a little suspect from the start, but has gotten worse recently.

It is NOT a hydraulic issue, I can leave the clutch pedal in and slow to s stop and shift into reverse with no crunch whatsoever, I have checked hydraulics every which way, not hydraulics, problem is only 2nd gear.

I am new to the forum, but there seem to be some pretty sharp experienced tech heads here, if I pull the tranny or pull the top cover anything I should look for/measure?, or is the only real fix to tear it down and check all the clearances and rebuild again?

This is the original box that came with the car, but O/D was added when I rebuilt it (J type).
