Since you're in Montreal, are you sure it's not tear gas ? LOL !

Seriously,

Many possible causes here. Besides the smoke, how does it run ? I would suspect timing and/or fuel issues first. When was the last tune-up done ? Check your spark plugs. That will give you some good clues about what's going on inside the engine (see attached file).

Hello again,

Went for a ride this morning and altough it was running great at iddle, I did have firing issues under load (ex: top of 1st). Guess I should have read the entire instructions and check timing once the kit was installed ! Some fine tunning tonight and I'll let you know how it goes (...not that anyone cares, but :D ...)

BTW. Each kit is specific to a make of distributor and to a number of cylinders. If something doesn't fit, you have the wrong kit :)

Hey,

First with the key on is there 12v at the coil. Sounds like it since it is warm/hot. Then is there 12v at the distributor? Seems like it.

The Petronix is a switch just like the points. You need to put a test light from one side of the coil to the side and try to start the motor. If the “switch” is working the light will flash as the motor turns.

No flash NO switch.

You may wish to have a look at youtube and search for MOSS motors. They have a lot of service video stuff like this.

I just installed a Petronix distributor in on of my TR8’s nice looking/fitting part. I am also in the process of “doing” a TR3.

It is getting a big motor and will get a Petronix switch. I will keep a set of points in the car.....just in case.

Cam timing Spitfire MKII

There have been a bunch of threads on this which I have studied at length, but I need micromanagement help ...I am good with a spanner and electrical, but timing has always seemed a dark art...

Spitfire MKII

I rebuilt my engine a couple of years ago and was driving around in it, but it never ran that well, and I had never used a timing light. Now that I have, it turns out that TDC appears to be ~40 degrees off or so - the mark is about 40 degrees to the left of the pulley when facing the engine head on (retarded?)

So I pulled the timing cover last night and have been scrutinizing the original (green) triumph manual. I took the timing chain back off since the cam gear has no markings whatsoever, figured I needed to start again.

1. Set engine to TDC (cam key facing up, cylinder 1 at top)
2. turn engine clockwise (normal rotation, right?) to get # 1 pushrod at top of travel, then set # 8 valve to .040
3. turn engine clockwise to get #2 at top of travel, then set # 7 valve to .040
4. turn engine until #7 and 8 are on the rock and measure for clearance. Here is my first problem - I am supposed to have the same clearance (no matter how small) between each valve, but despite setting these to .04 earlier, there is no gap - both are tight (though visually even) - is this ok?
5. assuming that step #4 is even and step #1 is the same exact position, I now need to place the timing gear and chain on, and line up two of the 4 holes exactly with the chain being tense on the left side (as facing the engine). If I do this, I don't quite understand how the 1/4 tooth 3/4 tooth issue come into play..

Help! Any more idiot level presentation of this information (including me sending you beer) would be immensely helpful.

BTW, turning the cam even with the plugs out is sort of tough- I need to screw in both of the bolts for the timing gear and use them to lever the cam around. Is this normal?

thanks - Nick

The chassis under the hood should all be the body color, should it not? Somebody sprayed black undercoat on the firewall under the battery and in places near the grille...

That poor, little motor is so choked down with emissions!

Actually, this was a fairly common practice in some Northern States to do at the dealerships back in the day. A pain in the ass to clean up or redo in any way.

Mine has that as well..... Don't know if it will be easier to try and remove or apply a better looking black?

Change the oil and use a magnet in the drain hole to see what you get. If you get thin steel, you confirmed the tensioner. If you fix it quick, you can save the timing cover. If not, it will wear through it. The good news is that the valves won't hit the pistons in the TR, so you can't damage the motor, even if the chain skips a tooth.

The TR7 shared some parts with the Spitfire on the earlier cars. Triumph was famous for borrowing parts from older car lines.

Also, don't limit your search to US suppliers. Rimmer Brothers in the UK has very competitive shipping with the US vendors and often a larger selection.

Though I'm not very knowledgeable about TR7's, I've heard of a vendor called "The Wedge Shop". They might have sources the other vendors don't have being a single focus shop.

Good luck!

P.S. Rimmers has reconditioned drums in stock and has new drums backordered. Pricey, but what are you going to do?
