Gone Off POR15 For Brake Lines

After having POR15'd the lines on the diff carrier, I was happy with the result. The recent POR15'ing of the main brake line was less than satisfactory.
During the preparation of the line I noticed that the lines looked pretty good after they'd been cleaned up with an abrasive paper.
I tried to use just WD40 on the lines with some finer abrasive foam sheet.
Worked out pretty good and that's what I've decided to do, cleaning the grime off and wiping clean with a clean rag.
Line look so much better too.

Moved On From Paint - For Now.

Took Peter's AC back to him the other day, so it's on to digging out the bits, cleaning them up and putting them back on.
Started with the main brake line. Cleaned it with some thinners, degreaser and scrubbed it with a foam backed abrasive.
Applied Metal Ready and wiped it with POR tinners.
After it was dry I gave it a coat of silver POR15. It's drying right now.

Silver Wheels

After a bit of fiddling with Peters' compressor - (it had a leak in the hose reel connection which was fixed with a couple of new O rings) - I made a 'Lazy susan' from an old wheel bearing and some pieces of thick ply and used it to spray the wheels.
I used about half a litre of paint and the Lazy susan made it easy. I should be able to use this for painting other smaller items.
I expected the enamel to take longer to dry but it seemed to dry fairly quickly. One thing I've noticed with the spray gun compared to using spray cans is, that it's much harder to get runs using the gun and I can get much more paint on the surface much quicker. I don't think I'll buy another spray can again!
I wanted to get Peters' AC back to him so I gave the engine bay another full coat of red as well as the dash shroud.

Yesterday I fired up the compressor and used the last of the top paint to cover over the sealer after masking and giving a first a coat of primer.
I had some paint left so I went over the main parts of the engine bay again and I came up even better.
I'm quite comfortable now that when it comes time to paint the whole car I will be able to get a nice finish on the surface.
I bought some silver wheel enamel paint today to spray the wheels and I'll do that on Wednesday.
It won't be long now and I'll be in full reassemble mode.

I also took the tyres to Goodyear tyre service at Erina and spoke to a fellow there about the tyres.
When I replaced the tyres on the Patrol I mentioned that I had these 'new' old tyres and he suggested I show them to him. Well, he seemed OK about them, given that it would be in his interests to suggest I buy new ones. I'm happy that he has given them the OK as long as I monitor their condition regularly.

Wheels And Tyres

These have been the main event recently and I've had a bit of a win with them.
After spending all last Sunday wrestling with them I took off the tyres and tubes - Phew!
Col at Harris and Adams Smash Repairs Gosford - top bloke, by the way, gave me a link to a guy who had done some sand blasting for them and I hit the jack pot with him.
Jason, did a good job on the rims and primed them for $150 for 5 of them, don't know his last name and he's not in the book. But I'm happy to give him a plug for his work and his prices.
Wheels look good and I'm going to coat them with some silver wheel paint as soon as I can. Probably Wed. this week.

I put some seam sealer in the joints in the engine bay where the inner guards and the firewall meet and I want to give them a spray of colour just to hide them before I give Peter his AC back.
It's been good to have but I don't like borrowing stuff and I want to get it back to him ASAP. The weather has not been kind to me in this regard a weeks rain has made everything wet and humid.
Rain's good as we are still in drought, but it's only coastal and not doing much for the drought.
I'll take some photos and post them tomorrow - if I remember.
Edit: Added some photos.

Primer And Top Coat.

Went over the engine bay again with some abrasive paper by hand and decided to remove all the paint from the oil cooler panel.
Used the cup brush and the blue grit disk.
Bought some Primer filler and some thinner. One general purpose for cleaning and use with the filler primer - dries fast apparently. One thinners for top coat - dries little slower - gives a better finish.
Thinned a jar of primer and hooked up the gun. Filled the reservoir fiddled with the settings, tried it out on drum surface and got stuck into the engine bay.
Went OK. Had to refill the gun regularly but that was not a hassle.
Covered the engine bay and was pretty happy although I thought I should get a wider spray pattern.
During the cleaning, I noticed that when I was blowing raw thinners, I was getting a much wider spray pattern.
Next day I sanded all the primer plus the primer on the rest that I'd done with spray cans. Mixed the primer/thinner with a bit more thinner and covered the whole car. Several refills but the spray pattern was much better.
I was very pleased with the smooth surface I was getting off the gun.
Light sanding the next day mainly with a foam sanding block. Follows the contours of the car much better. Taking mainly the overspray off.
Set up the gun, mixed the top coat - a little more thinners and laid down a coat of top coat every where. Had a litre tin of paint and used it all. Pretty pleased with the results, but it does show up flaws that I had not seen in the primer. Still it's a 40yr old car and a few little flaws in the paint aren't a problem.
Here are some photos.
